At the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean lies a wrecked ship. Inside it is a casket, with the name "Dio" written on it.
Sometime before this, the ship was exploding. A man holds up a canister, which contains the head of another. The canister shatters open, and the head comes to life.
The head stabs into the neck of Jonathan Joestar, causing him to bleed heavily. But he still fights, managing to stab the head.
Explosions continue inside the ship, and soon the entire thing explodes.
Jotaro Kujo wakes up, having had that dream again. He's in a jail cell, and two guards walk in. They talk about him, saying that he's 17 years old and has a father who works a jazz musician, who is currently on tour overseas. Jotaro's mother visits him every day trying to get him to leave, and his cell is filled with personal items. As they get to the cell, several other prisoners beg the guards to move them to another cell.
The guards say that Jotaro already sent eight of them to the hospital, but despite that, they've told him he's free to go. They wonder what Jotaro is trying to do here.
The Evil Spirit
Joseph Joestar arrives in America. He gets a call from Holy, his daughter, asking him for help. Jotaro ran into trouble with some local gang members, got into a fight, and is now in jail. The police have said they'll release him, but he refuses to leave, and says he won't go until he learns the true nature of the evil spirit which haunts him. Joseph tells her not to worry, and he'll be there right away.
Joseph arrives at the jail, and meets with Holy. As they go inside, a guard tells Jotaro he's going home today for sure. Joseph then walks over and says that's true.
Jotaro sees his damned mother even got this old man dragged into this... give him a break. Joseph thinks he shouldn't talk to his own mother that way, and also thinks he shouldn't be giving him that kind of attitude, especially since he came all the way here from New York for the first time in 10 years. Jotaro gets up, and Joseph tells him to get out of the cell, he'll be going home with him. Jotaro says he never told him to come here, and tells him to get lost.
Holy says she's sure Joseph can help him. Jotaro tells them they don't understand the terrible nature of this evil spirit. Somehow, another hand appears, and takes the guard's gun...
...and gives it to Jotaro. Jotaro points the gun at Joseph, but then points it as his own head, and fires. But something stops the bullet from hitting him.
Holy says another hand came out of Jotaro, which stopped the bullet. Joseph asks her if she could see that, and she says she could. He asks her if she's experienced any strange sensations, but she says she hasn't. Jotaro tosses the gun out of the cell, and the guards decide to leave, believing this matter would be best sorted out by Joseph. Holy asks if that hand was invisible to everyone else.
Joseph says he'll explain later, but for now they need to get Jotaro out of his cell. Jotaro tells him he won't leave, but then tells him to take this and go on home. He presents Joseph with a finger taken from his prosthetic hand. Joseph thinks Jotaro's abilities are far greater than he'd ever imagined, and thinks he won't be able to convince him to come out with words alone.
He thinks that for Jotaro to be ready for the danger he'll have to face, he must be made to understand physically. He signals for Avdol to deal with Jotaro, and says he met him in Egypt three years ago. He tells Avdol to make Jotaro come out of this cell.
Avdol says he might have to get rough, but Joseph says he doesn't care. Holy asks what's going to happen, but Joseph moves her back. Avdol then goes into a stance, and reveals that he has an ability very similar to Jotaro's.
Joseph says that the evil spirit Jotaro has is something Avdol also possesses. Avdol gets his spirit to use a fiery projectile, which pins Jotaro to the wall. Joseph says that Avdol's will is what controls this evil spirit, and its name is Magician's Red! Jotaro asks about the spirit.
Joseph says it can be controlled. Jotaro then reveals his own spirit, which appears out of him and takes out the flames.
Jotaro's spirit grabs Magician's Red by the throat. Avdol experiences the same thing, and he says he didn't think Jotaro could materialize it so well. He tells Joseph he thought he could take it easy on Jotaro, but his power is greater than he imagined. If he intends to force him out of the cell, he might end up putting him in a hospital. Joseph states again that he doesn't care.
Magician Red uses a technique called red bind, which pins Jotaro to the cell bars. The other prisoners can't understand what's going on...
...and neither can the guards, other than them realizing how hot it has gotten. Joseph tells Jotaro that if you weaken, your spirit also weakens. The true nature of what he thinks is an evil spirit is a vision of the power of his life energy. It appears and stands by your side, which is why they call these manifestations a "Stand".
Avdol asks Jotaro how he likes this, would he like to leave the cell now? Jotaro tells him if he keeps this up, he'll pay. He uses his Stand to smash open a toilet, causing a pipe to burst...
...and the water released puts out the flames of Magician's Red. The Stand prizes apart the cell bars, and then snaps a couple of them off. The Stand goes to attack Avdol with them...
...but he suddenly turns around, and withdraws his Stand. Jotaro asks him why he's turning his back on him. Avdol sits down, and tells Joseph that Jotaro is out of the cell now.
Jotaro looks down and realizes he's out of the cell. He withdraws his Stand, and says it looks like he's been outwitted. Avdol says that's not exactly true, as he'd intended to put him in a hospital. But Jotaro's Stand had much greater power than he was expecting. Jotaro asks what would have happened if his Stand had thrown that iron bar at him, but Avdol says Magician's Red would have vaporized it in midair.
Joseph tells Jotaro that his Stand has awakened because he'll need it. He says he'll explain it later, but now they can go home. Later on, at the Kujo residence...
Joseph tells Jotaro to listen to this: the story of the destiny bestowed upon the Joestar family. 4 years ago, a ship sailing in the Atlantic Ocean salvaged a sturdy iron casket from a shipwreck on the ocean floor. His grandfather, Jonathan Joestar, died on that sunken passenger ship. The crew of the ship hauled the casket up...
...and opened it. But Joseph says the casket was apparently empty. He says he's sure it once contained the body of the one that he and Avdol have been pursuing.
Jotaro tells him to wait -if this happened 100 years ago, are they really trying to go after a man who was underwater for that long? He's talking as if that man could still be alive! Joseph says that man, who he thinks is the very incarnation of evil, is still alive. He's awoken from his 100 years of sleep, and his name is Dio! They must fight against this man, as it's their destiny. He asks Holy if she got him what he asked for, and she passes his a camera. Joseph says that about a year ago, he himself developed a Stand.
Joseph brings out his Stand, Hermit Purple, and strikes the camera with it. The camera breaks, but fires out a photo which Jotaro catches. Joseph says his Stand has the ability to transfer visions from a great distance onto film. He tells Jotaro that the image about to appear on that photograph will determine his destiny.
He tells Holy and Jotaro to show the left sides of their necks, which they do. Joseph also does this, and says that these star shaped birthmarks...
...is the star of destiny, which that Joestar family cannot escape. According to his mother, his father, who had died whilst he was still a child, had that same birthmark. Jotaro asks what this has to do with the Stands, but Joseph tells him to look at the photo. It shows a picture of Dio, and Joseph says he's the only one to appear on every photo. But Dio also has a star shaped birthmark!
Joseph says that, from the neck down, Dio's body is actually Jonathan's! Jotaro looks at the photo, then feels as the birthmark on his own neck.
Meanwhile, Dio gets up, and says that he sensed someone was watching him again. He wonders if it could be Jonathan's descendants, and thinks that perhaps his body is somehow sending them signals. He then sees a woman, and drains her of her blood.
Back in Japan, Joseph says it has been four years since Dio awakened. He believes that the Stands they've gained has something to do with Dio. Avdol says that their abilities are what the world refers to as ESP. He was born with his ability, but their Stands are linked to Dio's body, or in other words, Jonathan's body. Dio's awakening brought forth their latent powers. Joseph asks him if he can tell where Dio is in that photograph, but he says he can't -as usual, the background behind Dio is in darkness.
Jotaro looks at the photo, and then sees something. He summons his Stand, and using its vision, is able to see something in the photo. The Stand draws what it can see: a fly.
Joseph says he'll send this drawing to the Speedwagon Foundation, so they can investigate. Avdol thinks it could help them narrow down the places where Dio could be. As they talk, Jotaro steps outside, and feels at the birthmark on his neck.
Meanwhile, a woman called Enya is looking at some tarot cards, and reveals the Hermit and Magician. She flips over another card, revealing the Star. She believes the Star is the key, and she then starts laughing.
