A prototype version of Earnest Evans was released by drx of The Hidden Palace on the 2nd of May 2016. This is a prototype of the cartridge version of the game, and whilst not much is different in terms of the levels, it does still have some things that were cut from the final game. One of the biggest differences about this prototype is that it has a unique introduction sequence that ended up being cut from the final version:

It seems that originally, Renovation/Wolf Team intended for you to be playing as the Earnest Evans featured in El Viento in the cartridge version. However, this intro was scrapped for the final version of the game, which instead consisted of a few scenes from the CD version but with the dialogue removed. The game's story was only revealed in the manual, on the back of the box and in a magazine ad, which states that the character you are playing as is the Grandson of the Earnest Evans from El Viento and the story takes place in the 1980's.

It's a shame all of the above went to waste. One of the images appears to be based on an image featured in a cutscene from the CD version, where Ullrich speaks to Al Capone. After the text finishes...

Earnest spins around, and looks towards some mountains. After this the title screen appears.

A small edit was made to the layout of the copyright text.

Some edits were made to the main menu choices. "CONFIGURATION" was used in the CD version, something kept for this proto, but changed to "OPTIONS" for the final game. The CD version originally had "GAME START" as the top choice, this proto has "RESTART" whilst the final just has "START".

It seems that whoever did the screenshots for the manual took images from a prototype version of the game, potentially this one -page 6 shows the proto menu screen.

The prototype features a border border beneath the HUD, something that was also present in the CD version. However the border was removed from the final cartridge version, and the stuff in the HUD was moved down slightly.

If you get to the top of the train carriages in the prototype version, you'll find 3 enemies with guns in the prototype -the same as in the CD version. For the final cartridge version of the game, there are only 2 enemies, one who has a pipe, the other has a gun.

Upon completing the game, the final version goes straight to the credits sequence. But in this prototype, a very short ending scene is shown before the credits:

I know it's not much, but did they really need to cut that? Anyway, that's just about it in terms of differences I could find. A big thanks to drx for releasing this -if a prototype of the cartridge version was dumped, maybe we can hold hope for a proto of the CD version being found some day, such as the one showing early screenshots in the manual. Make sure to check out The Hidden Palace for more prototype rom stuff.
