Slam City with Scottie Pippen

Another game from Digital Pictures, Slam City is possibly the worst one they made for the 32X CD. You play as a basketball player who wants to earn respect, and has to take on other players in one on one games. This is the least impressive 32X CD port, as whilst it benefits from more colors than the SEGA CD version, the video window is still quite small. Plus there's the fact that the actual game is still no good, with it being very difficult to tell if you can make a shot, or trying to get the ball from the opponent. It has a lot of cheesy short cutscenes which are amusing to watch, but as far as basketball games go, you'd be far better off getting NBA Jam.

Info

You play as Ace, a basketball player who wants to earn respect. He wants to do this so he can go into a one on one game against NBA star Scottie Pippen. To be able to play against him, he needs to earn over one billion respect points -which is possible by playing against and beating four other players. Games are one on one. When you have the ball, you have ten seconds to try and make a basket with it, but your opponent will try and stop you be either taking the ball (and then scoring themselves) or blocking your shot.

You must try to get close to the basket, whilst getting out of the opponent's way. You can try to dodge around them with the ball, and if you manage this, you'll automatically go and score. Holding up and down on the d-pad increases or decreases the strength of your shot, whilst holding left or right will usually move you in either direction. The A button is used for making a shot, whilst the B button can be used for trying to get past your oppoennt.

When you don't have the ball you'll have to try and stop the opponent from scoring. The A button will make you jump up, whilst the C button makes you try and snatch the ball from the opponent. The B button will let you try to block the opponent's shot. Earning respect is a case of making good dunks, such as the "super slams" -making a shot from a certain position will make Ace do a impressive dunk that will give you a lot more respect points. However you'll also need to stop the opponent from scoring, as if they do, you'll lose respect. A game save option lets you save your progress, so you don't have to start over every time you play.

Cheats

Bonus FMV scene
Enter the options menu, then hold down the A, B and C buttons in order. "B24" will appear in the top left corner. With the buttons still held, press up on the d-pad. A short FMV will start, featuring some of the cast.

Trivia

As with the standard CD version, this game comes on four discs.

The back of the European version's case claims the game works with the six button controller, and whilst that's technically true, the X, Y, Z and mode buttons don't appear to do anything in the game.
