Corpse Killer

Another release from Digital Pictures, Corpse Killer is a shooting game with a whole lot of cutscenes. The game is playable with SEGA's Menacer peripheral, but can also be played with a control pad. Playing as a special forces member, your goal is to rescue your team mates and confront Dr. Hellman, a mad scientist who has created a zombie army, and plans to unleash them on the world.

The gameplay of Corpse Killer involves very short scenes where the camera usually moves from one left to right, whilst lots of zombies shamble towards you in an amusing manor. Your gun has infinite ammo, but you can also get special bullets which are needed to kill certain enemies, and some have to be used to change zombies back into humans. Other than the shooting, the game lets you choose which location you want to go next via a map screen. There is also a datapod which lets you view lots of information about characters, items and the story.

Whilst the gameplay is very repetitive, there is at least a game save option, which is good as Corpse Killer is best played in short bursts. The 32X CD version boasts more colors, a larger game window and better image quality than the regular SEGA CD version, possibly making it the best version of the game for a SEGA console -although the Saturn version might be better (see below).

Info

Your special forces team has parachuted into the island, but all team members aside from you have been captured and turned into zombies. You'll be saved by Winston, a zombie slayer who's on the look out for treasure and also has a jeep to drive you around in. You'll also meet Julie, a journalist who's going after her biggest story ever.

As you go from location to location, you'll have to fight against Dr. Hellman's zombie hordes. Most of them will die from a single hit, but certain enemies can only be taken down by special bullets. You can collect these by completing certain missions. Firing is done by holding down the A button. When you aren't firing you can press the B button to swap your bullet type, and the C button will abort the current mission.

You start off with 99 health, which will decrease whenever you take hits. You can regain health by finishing certain missions. Sometimes you'll get to choose between getting health or bullets, other times you'll get extra health at the end of a mission.

Cheats

Extra datura bullet
Whilst holding down the A button, keep tapping the B button. You'll fire datura bullets (which are green rather than red) even if you don't have any.

Trivia

A SEGA Saturn version of Corpse Killer was released in 1995. Called Corpse Killer: Graveyard Edition, this version improves on the 32X CD version by having full-screen video, more colors, better sprites and more. It has a new feature where zombies will suddenly appear in your face, along with some other extras like a difficulty select. However, this version was criticized due to it not being compatible with a lightgun.

The back of the European version's case claims the game works with the six button controller, and whilst that's technically true, the X, Y, Z and mode buttons don't appear to do anything in the game.
