Hokuto no Ken:
Seizetsu Jūban Shōbu

Hokuto no Ken: Seizetsu Jūban Shōbu
-From Rage Quitter 87's Fist of the North Star site

The only GameBoy Hokuto no Ken game was released on the 22nd of December, 1989. It was also the first game based on the series to be a one on one fighter, featuring characters from Hokuto no Ken and Hokuto no Ken 2. Each character has a variety of techniques, and the goal of the single player mode is to defeat everyone else. There are also two other modes which can only be played via link-up. The game was also released in America the following year under the name of Fist of the North Star: 10 Big Brawls for the King of Universe.

Gameplay

The "normal mode" has you select one of 11 characters and fight through several stages. Most characters are capable of either punching or kicking, whilst some are also capable of throwing out projectiles -underneath a character's life gauge is an aura gauge, by holding down the punch button, you can charge the gauge up. Once it is full, let go of the punch button to summon a projectile. By winning fights, you can gain experience points and level up your character to make him stronger. The VS and team modes are for two players only, requiring two GameBoys, two copies of the game and a link cable to play.

Whilst it was probably the most playable Hokuto no Ken game released up to this point, it is still largely lacking. The character balance is very bad, with Kaioh and Souther being able to fire off three projectiles at once, making them dominant over everyone else, whilst Heart is almost completely useless. The A.I. can also have some very bizarre quirks, such as getting Souther stuck in a jumping loop if you just get close to him, duck, and start mashing the kick button. As mentioned above, the game was released in America, but aside from having a cooler looking title screen, there are no differences between it and the Japanese version.
